What Is Refrigeration?
Refrigeration is the removal of heat from a system. It is the process of lowering the temperature of a system, and also maintaining the lowered temperature.
Refrigeration is applied in food preservation and maintaining an atmosphere conducive for bodily comfort. In the science of refrigeration, the device used in reducing and maintaining a low temperature is termed the refrigerating system while the system whose temperature is to be lowered and maintained is termed the refrigerated system.
Refrigeration is brought about by:
1. The melting of a solid,
2. The sublimation of a solid, or
3. By evaporation of a liquid.
Most commercial refrigeration systems operate based on the evaporation of a liquid which is called a refrigerant.
